Camogli: The Best of the Italian Riviera

First off, I gotta confess: I am not a beach person. I don’t consider “soaking in the sun” to be a pursuit worth sweating over.

So, with that settled, I can tell you I like staying within sight of water. And Camogli is the best place I can think of on the Italian Riviera to do that.

Sure, lots of hotels and vacation rentals in Italy advertise to the clueless traveler that they’re located in old fishing villages, so you should come and wallow in the quaintness. But when you get there and your eyes clamp on to the cheaply built concrete boxes that have been strung out along the coast to deny the views to everyone else, you’ll wonder in what century people fished there.  But there really are boats in Camogli. I’ve seen them. I’ve photographed them. I’ve even been in Camogli in November when the daytime weather was fine. Camogli oozes quaint, and it does it without getting all syrupy, if you know what I mean. This is not Disneyland Coast.

I’ve taken countless pictures of the beach at Comogli and those fine apartments painted in pastels that surround the shifting sands in a gentle arc.

Did you know you could stay in one? Yup, and it’s not so expensive as you might think. The
Camogli holiday get away, an apartment located one of the interesting buildings pictured on the right, can be yours for a song. The building was built in 1000, says the lit. Do you know of anything built in 1000? Mostly people were running around afraid that the sky would fall at the turn of the millenium, but the Comogliese were building apartment buildings. Interesting.

So, if you’re looking to vacation in the Italian Riviera, and want more than sun and rental lawn chairs, give Camogli a look. It’s my all time favorite.
