Narni - Stay in a Traditional Farm House in the Center of Italy

The Umbrian village of Narni is darn close to the exact geographical center of Italy. If you want to stand at the exact spot, you walk toward the Roman Ponte Cardona, part of the Roman Aqueduct Formina. Nearby is the marker.

You can scratch the surface of Narni–and it has a lot to see right there on the top, but you can also go to Narni Sotteranea–underground Narni, to see caves, antiquities, and an inquisition chamber. All this in a town you’ve never heard of.

umbria vacation rentalWhere to stay? Well, I’ve stayed in several Umbrian farm houses over the years. Egidio, over there on the left, is the traditional style of Umbrian farmhouse you see all over. Originally, the animals would have bedded down for the night in the bottom of the house, providing the only source of overnight heat for the weary inhabitants. Lucky you, the place has been fitted with central heating, so no worries about needing steam to rise off the sheep to feel comfortable.

If you like evocative ruins, those around nearby Otricoli should do you. Right on the Via Flaminia, there are ruins of some baths, an amphitheatre, and a very big structure nobody has yet stuck their neck out to define. It’s a great place to walk around. Bring a sketch pad.

Get centered. Get to Narni. Walk around a bit and see the Roman ruins, then retreat to your farmhouse in the country for a glass of wine and a sunset. It beats sitting in a cubicle, wondering if your boss is going to catch you surfing around on the Internet in a vacation dream state yet again.

It probably snows a little in this location. Just a bit north in northern Tuscany, we’ve had some snow each November I’ve been there.
