<description>Not only are the pubs disappearing, but also the old pub names. The first pub signs were brought to England during the Roman invasion 2000 years ago when tavern owners hung bunches of evergreens outside. When pilgrimages began in the 12th Century the monasteries couldn&#039;t cope with the number of visitors so inns opened, taking religious-sounding names - the names and signs inspired by the pictures in stained glass windows. Pub signs were possibly the earliest form of pictorial advertising and were inspired by heroes, royalty, religion and the odd scandal. Between them they tell quite a story and form a pictorial history of Britain. No matter how old the pub, very often, the name above the door is the most historic thing about the place.
