I first tasted whale meat in Bergen. It was odd, to say the least. Imagine a sort of 50/50 cross between beef and fish. It’s something you try once, just so you can blog about it.
But it didn’t leave a bad taste in my mouth about Bergen, a beautiful city on the west coast of Norway. There’s lots to explore in the World Heritage city of Bergen, including the historic waterfront called Bryggen featuring some buildings over 900 years old. Then you can take the Fløibanen–one of Norway’s most visited attractions–a funicular that takes you up the mountain of Fløyen where you’ll get a great view of Bergen and the fjords.
Then you can take off for a little adventure by taking the train to Myrdal and transferring to the Flaam Railway for a trip on the steepest rail line in the world down to Flaam.
You’ll need some time for all this, especially if you take a cruise up the coast. I’d rent that cute Bergen holiday cottage over there. You could pretend to be a whaler as you trudge up the stairs to your cute little bedroom in your big whaler boots–or something. Vacations are times for fantasies after all…
Norway is a fascinating and beautiful place. There’s lots of cute little houses and apartments to rent. And Norway is expensive, so a holiday rental can save some money, especially if you have more than one or two people in tow.
And they don’t force the whale meat on you. Really.
