Ok, so you thought Pula and Nora were the names of two women, or perhaps little pets belonging to a rich person. No, that would be wrong. Pula is a resort village on the southwestern coast of Sardinia. The stretch of beaches, also called Pula, is one of the most compelling in the Mediterranean.
It’s been that way for a long time. You see, there’s evidence that the Phoenicians were here in the 8th century B.C. And they were smart enough to build right on the seashore. The ruins are magnificent. The roman amphitheater still stands. In fact, it’s used during summer theater and music festivals.
I attended a performance once. Three of us saw “Our Town” in Italian.
It might be romantic sitting in a threesome in an amphitheater by the sea, but we wanted more–so before the performance we went and asked the local bar owner if people brought wine to the performances.
“Si,” he said with resolve, as if it were a common practice.
So we bought a bottle of wine from him.
It wasn’t difficult smuggling it into the performance. It wasn’t like they were looking for weapons or even glass containers. But to answer our first question: No, it didn’t appear that anyone else was bringing wine to the performance.
Now, “Our Town” isn’t exactly a play you’d expect the Italians, and especially the Sardinians, to really understand. That was ok because we didn’t understand it either. I mean, the Italian was just over our heads.
Then there was the effect of the wine. Add to that the gentle sound of the surf rolling in just meters away from where we sat–on stone seats, unfortunately–and you might detect the perfect conditions for the tiniest bit of drowsiness. Despite the seats we managed to snore more than folks around us would probably have wished for.
So, go! Maybe to a musical performance you can understand. Get a really nice bottle of wine and trade it for some seat cushions that some smarty has thought to bring along.
And you might as well rent a house in the country while you’re at it. Around this part of Sardinia the hotels can cost pretty much an arm and a leg, while a house that sleeps five can cost much less per person. The Sardinian vacation rental over there to the left has a great kitchen, so you’ll save money there and you won’t have to find the famous Sardinian maggot cheese called “formaggio con vermini” on your plate in a restaurant unless you have a craving for it and find a shepherd who can supply you some.
Sardinia is an amazing place. Beaches like you wouldn’t believe with some of the cleanest water in the Mediterranean. Check it out.
