A few years ago I spent some time in a very pleasant village in far northern Portugal called Ponte de Lima. It’s called that because of the Roman bridge spanning the river. Cars and trucks still trundle over the 2000 year old bridge.
The picture to the left isn’t of that bridge. This is a typical bridge on the banks of the EstorApoundsos River near the 17th century vacation property called Moinho de EstorApoundsos. That’s Portuguese for Mill on the River. Yes, you can stay in the old mill, and it won’t cost you a sack of money, either.
Stay here and you’re only 7km from the market town of Ponte de Lima.
Portugal isn’t as cheap as it was before the EU started doling out funds to improve the poorer member states, but it’s not expensive, an important fact to consider now that the dollar’s value is dropping like a rock against the Euro. And by staying in a vacation house, even a romantic one like this one, you’ll save even more money on your vacation over staying in a hotel.
Portugal is rapidly becoming my favorite country. It’s too bad most travelers don’t seem to know much about it.
