What Ever Happened to Limburger Cheese?

Way back in Medieval times when I was a kid, the most important foreign word we kids used was “Limburger.” Most of us didn’t know about the city of Limburg, we just had heard somewhere that cheese called Limburger was stinky, so much so that the word became synonymous with the cheese.

That was way before the internet. Now you just do a search and wham!, you know that Limburg is a place that is “divided between modern-day Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany,” according to Wikipedia.

Border towns. I love them.

You can also find out that ” The bacteria used to ferment Limburger cheese and other rind-washed cheeses is Brevibacterium linens; this same bacteria is found on human skin and is partially responsible for human body odor.”

We were darn smart kids. “Smarty pants” my mother used to say. Now you know why.

Holiday Rental Cottage in BelgiumI was thinking about this as I ran across just the cutest little vacation cottage snuggled in the Belgian woods with a tiny little open air pool right in front. The vacation rental is cheap, too, which is a good thing in these dollar challenged economic times.

I wondered what it would be like to be all alone there out in the woods, doing the backstroke in my little pool. Then it dawned on me. You could eat all the Limburger you wanted out there. Nobody would say, “Geeze, the guy next door hasn’t washed in a week!” You could leave the smelly cheese out on the table. There’s nobody out there to gag at the sight of it.

Limburger lovers unite!
